Wall Art

Our chalkboard wall has undergone some changes over the course of the year. I try to change it based on a unit we're working on or the season of the year we're in. It's been a creative outlet for me and I think the kids have liked it, too!

We started off with a space theme...

Then we moved to North Carolina...

Thanksgiving came, so we did a thankfulness turkey...

The kids got in on the action...

Then came Christmas...

Winter was all about Dr. Seuss and hot chocolate...

Then we celebrated Jesus' resurrection...

And now we're counting the days till summer!

p.s. If you have any tips for cleaning chalkboard paint walls quickly and on-the-cheap, let me know(-:

A Step Back in Time...

We went on a field trip recently where we were transported to a hundred year ago. We spent the day at the Oconaluftee Mountain Farm making cookies in the cabin kitchen, making dinner bells at the blacksmith shop, and exploring the Farm's many outbuildings. What an amazing experience!

Poetry Unit

We've done a lot of work on figurative language and the kids have been practicing adding it to different types of poetry. Here are some wonderful examples of their poetry.

Ponds
Ponds are so beautiful ,frogs live there.
Ponds have sparkling blue water,

They have rocks,not sharp rocks,
smooth rocks, fish, deep water, very pretty.

Openly beauty remains thine.

We Got the Whole World in Our Hands

When I was student teaching, I made paper mache globes with my kids, and I decided to try it again with this class. We made a mess and enjoyed the process, and we also learned about the 7 continents, 5 oceans, and other fascinating facts about this amazing earth we live on.

The First step was putting paper on balloons

 Waiting for them to dry...

Then came the oceans and continents
 Drying again

 Adding the labels
Finished products

Nothing like learning while you're making a mess!
