Cradle of Forestry Field Trip

The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are vibrant in their fall foliage, and it's time for another field trip! This week, we took a trip to the Cradle of Forestry. The morning was chilly, so we started out the day inside exploring the exhibits and looking for animals in their habitats.

There is a disguised tree frog at the top of the aquarium.

Two tiny brown anole lizards sit on the branch on the right.

The kids crawled through the tunnel to see animal habitats.

They took a "ride" in the helicopter to see a forest fire from the air.

After spending some time exploring inside and watching a movie about forest preservation, we ventured out to the trail that took us to some historic buildings. First stop: the schoolhouse. It was cold and we were reminded how grateful we can be to have heating and electricity in our modern school.

A lot of skipping happened on our walk!

We arrived at a mercantile and cabin.

After an office cabin, we saw a lodge.

One of our favorite stops was the blacksmith shop where we got to see a demonstration and learn a lot about blacksmiths and what they do.

We made our way back to the museum and ate a picnic lunch in the beautiful sunshine. We were hungry after such a busy morning! Then we learned a little about beavers in preparation for a hike out to a pond to do some exploring.

It was a beautiful day for a hike and our guide did a great job teaching us along the way.
 learning about blazes

We made it to the pond where we commenced digging into the silt at the bottom to find critters. We found a lot of nymphs which are baby flies. We got a little muddy, too.

Then it was time to skip on back to the bus and make our way back to school.

Fire Prevention

We had our fire prevention program this week and the theme was perfect: Despicable Me! Gru and the minions helped us learn some safety rules. Fun times!

Down on the Farm

What a great time we had at our Down on the Farm family night and fundraiser. The food was delicious, the artwork was beautiful, and the entertainment was so much fun!

The kids did a great job with their music performance.

Up in the Air

We got a special treat the other day when the high schoolers came over to our campus to shoot off their model rockets. They even let us do the countdown to shoot them off. What an exciting experience!

It's About Time

Here are a few pictures of the fun clock men we made a few weeks ago while we were studying time:

We used them to practice elapsed time.
